Preserving and Protecting Our Environment

2023-10-18

We all may have wondered from childhood what is happening with Earth and why there are everywhere campaign boards carrying awareness on global warming, plastic pollution, exploitation of natural resources, and save the Earth programs. At least once in your lifetime, you have wondered about these questions!

· Is our planet truly in a critical state?

· Are we facing the threat of extinction?

· Why are there dedicated efforts to protect certain animals and birds?

· Are we overemphasizing minor issues?

Continue reading if you are waiting for a detailed answer!

While we have been introduced to the concept of global warming from our schooling, its true magnitude might not have been entirely clear. Let's delve into the interpretation of the synthesis report provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to gain a deeper understanding of saving our environment immediately!

Who is IPCC?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a leading international body that provides scientific assessments regarding climate change, its impacts, and potential adaptation and mitigation strategies, guiding global climate policy and action.

The report from the IPCC states that

  • The emission of global greenhouse gases has continued to rise between 2010 and 2019 due to unsustainable energy use and various consumption patterns across regions and countries.
  • Global surface temperature during the years 2011–2020 surpassed the 1850–1900 levels by roughly 1.1°C (1.09 [0.95 to 1.20] °C).
  •  Land areas experienced a more substantial increase in temperature, rising by about 1.59 [1.34 to 1.83] °C.
  • Ocean temperatures saw a comparatively lower increase, at approximately 0.88
    [0.68 to 1.01] °C.

Following are some of the serious harmful effects that we have caused to our whole
    environment for years

  • The observed warming is primarily attributed to human activities, particularly the impact of greenhouse gases (GHG), notably CO2 and methane (CH4).
  • This has impacted food and water security, human health, economies, societies, and the environment all over the world.
  • The rise in extreme weather and climate events has exposed millions of people to acute food insecurity and reduced water scarcity.
  • These consequences have led to damage to both nature and people, affecting communities disproportionately, especially those who have contributed the least to current climate change.
  • From these points, it is clear that human activities, especially the release of greenhouse
gases, have definitely led to global warming. So, we are on the verge of making an
immediate call to action to preserve and protect our environment.

Call for Action!

Let us watch out for some effective ways to preserve the existing environment:

60% of the impact can be reduced just through water adaptation measures such as on-farm water management, water storage, soil moisture conservation, irrigation, cultivar improvements, agroforestry and community-based adaptation, and enhancing natural water retention, such as restoring wetlands and rivers.

40% of the impact can be reduced through land adaptation measures such as a decrease in deforestation and degradation, sustainable food production, enhanced and sustainable forest management, the management of soil organic carbon, the conservation of ecosystems and land, as well as the reduction of food loss and waste, which can lead to additional advantages in terms of mitigation.

Every living thing, from the tiniest bug to the tallest tree, has the important purpose of keeping our planet healthy. As humans with much ability, we all have the desired responsibility to take care of the Earth, not only for ourselves but also to pass on a healthy environment to future generations. Every time we make eco-friendly choices to protect nature, there is a positive impact on the earth. Lets work together to make the Earth the best place for every species, leaving behind the marks of health and prosperity for generations!
